It contained the collected wisdom of that fine coach Bob Woolmer, though at 656 pages it was not something you could readily carry around in your cricket bag.
Now they have revived Donald Bradman's How to Play Cricket which, at a crisp 94 pages, could be slipped behind your thigh pad for extra protection. It is a pleasing confirmation of the truism about cricket being a simple game we are apt to overcomplicate.
The brevity is partly a matter of provenance. How to Play Cricket - and it is a shame New Holland did not trouble to provide an introduction or explanatory note - was first published in instalments from May 1935 in London's Daily Mail newspaper.
At that stage, pace Kevin Pietersen, Bradman probably had more English admirers than Australian ones. How to Play Cricket was in fact not published here for another decade, and last published 20 years later, by which time it had been effectively supplanted by Bradman's longer and more discursive The Art of Cricket (1958).
How to Play Cricket was also the first instructional book by an Australian cricketer to make use of stop-action photography - "magic-eye" or "cinema-photographs", as they were popularly known - to demonstrate continuous strokes.
First used to effect in Archie MacLaren's 1926 study of Englishman Jack Hobbs, The Perfect Batsman, these represented a huge advance on the stiff and staged images previously relied on in cricket pedagogy. The film strips of Bradman attractively reproduced here ooze compact power.
Bradman's explanatory text is modest, self-effacing, almost self-erasing. You would scarcely imagine the writer to be the conqueror of the cricket world. You would hardly guess that not a year earlier he had very nearly died of a burst appendix, of which he drops only a hint in discussing a fetish for strapping his ankles:
Incidentally, that reminds me of another experience I once had -- reading the report of my own death in a newspaper. Rather an unusual occurrence. However, I am straying from the point.
How to Play Cricket has, nonetheless, worn disarmingly well. It has its quaintnesses. Bradman describes oiling his bat, favouring open-palm gloves, playing on concrete pitches and professes a belief in well-honed basics: "Defence. That should be your watchword, and every cricketer should regard his defence as the builder does the foundation of the house."
This would not get him far in the Big Bash League, where defence is something for hitting sixes over.
