Dressing like a "Mad Man"

This fall, fans of AMC’s 1960s-inspired drama “Mad Men” will be able to dress like their favorite characters with a new collection from Banana Republic.

The creative team at the urban-sophisticate retailer has teamed up with the shows Emmy Award-winning costume designer, Janie Bryant, to create a collection that not only captures the 1960s essence of the show but also affords fans a chance to own a piece of fashion history, inspired by their favorite show.

The 65-piece capsule collection, all of the which can be mixed and matched cohesively, consists of clothing and accessories that will showcase the trends of the 1960s.

Women can expect everything from floral- and houndstooth-printed dresses to sleeveless mesh tops and leopard-printed handbags to chunky statement necklaces. Male customers will find a sophisticated, yet Ivy League feel with tailored suits, fitted trousers and accessories that execute the image such as skinny ties, money clips and pocket squares.

Creative Director Simon Kneen is very excited about the collaboration, and especially so about working with Bryant.

“Janie was instrumental in helping us achieve the series’ aesthetic and standard of authenticity with this capsule collection, offering sketches, her own inspirations and actual artifacts from the production set to help inspire the ‘Mad Men’ within all of us,” Kneen said.

The collection is said to be in the realm of affordable luxury; however, shoppers, especially those with a tailored budget, know that when it comes to affordable, Banana Republic isn’t the first retailer that comes to mind. The question then becomes one of how to create a 1960s-inspired look without having to pay high prices. The shopper’s eye must turn itself away from the new, modern and trendy and focus on materials, prints and shapes.

The patient and determined shopper should be on the lookout for “swing coats, cardigan sets and circle skirts that hit just below the knee,” according to Suzanne Fleming, journalism adjunct at Wayne State who has more than an eye for fashion.

Also, wide-legged pants and shift-style dresses with invisible waistlines should be on the list.

Vintage shops and thrift stores such as “Lost & Found” in Royal Oak, or Salvation Army locations throughout metro Detroit are great ways to find vintage pieces to affordably take your walk down memory lane to relive an era unbeknownst to many shoppers born in recent generations.
