BEAUTY TIPS: Are heat tools damaging your hair?

Most of us use some sort of heat styling tool on our hair. Whether it's just a blow dryer or something more excessive, like a flat iron, we all do it, to some extent. And sense we're not likely to stop anytime soon, we need to be educated, so we can protect our hair.

It is very important to use some type of protection when using high temperature heat tools. Flat irons usually cause the most damage, but dryers and curling irons do too. There are many products out there, for heat protection, and you may have to try a few out before your find the right one for you. You can visit my blog for some product information. There are shampoos and conditioners for heat protection and repair, but the most important are the type that you apply, to your hair, right before styling. You may choose a spray, cream, gel, oil or a gloss, but make sure to apply it to all of your hair. A good conditioner is important to maintain hydration in the hair and regular deep conditioners are a very good thing, especially if your hair is chemically treated.

Know your tools, so you can prevent damage from getting out of control. Cutting is the only way to fix excessive damage. Use your dryer on low to medium heat and speed, and make sure to get it completely dry before using any irons. The steam produced when ironing damp hair can be extremely hot, and the style will not hold if there is any moisture in the hair. Be aware of the temperature settings on your tools. If you have thick, course or extra curly hair, a temperature of 350?- 400? will be o.k. If your hair is average in texture and wave, 300?- 380? should do the trick. For fine, damaged and chemically treated hair, stay below 300?. Most of us probably fall in that third category so we need to use every precaution. Start with your tools on the lowest setting and work your way up, until you get a good result, but with the least amount of heat possible. Try to take small sections, when using a flat iron, and make the least amount of passes, over the hair, you can. This is also where the heat sprays come handy as they usually have a good hold and are humidity resistant too. If you use a curling iron, only hold it on for 8 seconds or less. If it is still not curling, it may be time to update your iron. Get irons that are ceramic, tourmaline or titanium. They are less damaging and the heat is more evenly distributed along the surface, to achieve a better result.
