Franklin County area ball players are 'Back to the Brook'
An annual pick-up basketball event will continue at the former Coldbrook Elementary School and its participants showed their appreciation with a dedication ceremony on Saturday.
Back to the Brook, a pick-up hoops game which started with a few phone calls three years ago, planned something special for the third reunion.
The Chambersburg Area School District transferred the property to the Chambersburg YMCA with the help of a generous donation made by the Nitterhouse family.
The YMCA intends to turn the property into the William K. Nitterhouse Family YMCA Program Center.
"With the YMCA purchasing it and how this played out that we can continue to be here for as long as we can be for other young people, we just feel it's important to do this every year," said Bob Faubel, who helps organize the event every year.
The pick-up game, originally a reunion of players who used to meet at the school in years past, has grown to about 60 participants including families who come to watch the games.
"It's more like a family," Faubel said. "We're just very fortunate. A lot of guys played here. They enjoyed the challenges, the competition and more so the fellowship."
The group donated a plaque which was placed in the ground between the basketball court and a shade tree. The plaque is in remembrance of Brook players who are no longer around and for future basketball players on the court.
