$90.1 million deal: Arizona Eastern Railway being sold

The new owner, Genesee & Wyoming Inc., operates short-line and regional railroads in the United States, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands and Belgium.  The company says it provides rail service to 17 ports in North America while its other operations also include 63 railroads in nine regions in Australia, in addition to railways in the two European countries. Corporate headquarters are in Greenwich, Conn. Iowa Pacific Holdings, based in Chicago, Ill., says it owns railroad properties across North America and the United Kingdom. Ed Ellis, President, said, “We are grateful to the hard working men and women of Arizona Eastern Railway for their diligence and creativity in assisting us with the turnaround of this important rail property in Eastern Arizona. We also acknowledge the instrumental contributions of the major customer, Freeport-McMoRan Copper and Gold, toward the rehabilitation of the track and bridges.  We are confident that Genesee & Wyoming will take Arizona Eastern to the next level in service and condition of the physical plant.” The historic origin of what is now the Arizona Eastern Railway Company first began back in 1885 as the Gila Valley Globe and Northern Railway. Before completion to Globe in 1899, GVGN came under the control of the Arizona Eastern Railroad which was later leased by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company in the year 1905. By 1924, it was merged into the Southern Pacific system. It was around 1988 when Southern Pacific left Globe-Miami and other mining communities it was serving in Eastern Arizona and sold its Bowie-Miami line to Kyle Railroad.   Kyle in 1995 was purchased by a company called States Rail.  However in 2001, Rail America purchased the local line from States Rail who sold it to a division of Iowa Pacific Holdings, LLC on Dec. 9, 2004. It was in 2008 when officials of Arizona Eastern decided to purchased the Clifton Subdivision from Union Pacific Railroad. The Clifton subdivision serves the Morenci Mine near Clifton, Ariz. and interchanges with Union Pacific at Lordsburg, N.M. In December of 2008, the company launched weekend excursion service under the name Copper Spike, which began operating from Globe to the Apache Gold Hotel Casino near San Carlos.  Trains operate four daily round trips through the winter and spring, on Thursday through Sundays. Service is currently on hiatus through November.

Proposed Arizona copper mine mired in red tape | MINING.com News

A copper mine proposed for southern Arizona is stuck in limbo while federal regulatory agencies decide whether to grant the mining company a permit. that Rosemont Copper is waiting for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to grant or deny a permit for the mine, located on a mix of private and public land in the Santa Rita Mountains some 30 miles southeast of Tucson. Canadian Business says Rosemont Copper must obtain a permit from the corps to build diversion structures to reroute water now running in washes around various proposed mine facilities, including its open pit. While the corps could legally deny the mine a permit, even though it is on federal land, the US Forest Service has "said several times since 2008 it cannot say no to the mine because of an 1872 Mining Law and other federal laws that support the rights of companies to mine federal land," according to the story. Rosement says on its website that the mine is expected to produce 221 millon pounds of copper per year, 4.7 million pounds of moly, 2.4 million ounces of silver and 15,000 ounces of gold by-product over a minelife of more than 20 years. The property contains three copper/moly skarn deposits with proven and probable reserves of 546 million tons. Rosemont first started the permitting process in 2007 by filing a Plan of Operations with the Forest Service, the federal agency in charge of reviewing potential impacts and mitigation strategies.
