So-called smart meters are not smart for Maui. As an Energy Health Specialist and author of the acclaimed book Endless Energy, I have some expertise in electromagnetic radiation (EMR) and its effects on human health. James Griffin, project manager for the South Maui Energy Project who oversees the arrival of smart meters coming to Maui by the end of this year, was on-island recently recruiting volunteers to have smart meters installed in their homes. He was quoted as saying that smart meters are ârisk-free.â Nothing could be further from the truth. Smart meters are wireless devices that run 24/7 and emit dangerous levels of EMR that cannot be turned off by the people who agree to have them in their homes. In addition, smart meters require wireless antennas to be located throughout neighborhoods in close proximity to individual smart meters. Whatâs more, in order for the meters to monitor and control energy usage, you must be willing to install power transmitters on appliances inside your home. These transmitters emit radio frequency/microwave radiation (RF) throughout your home. California communities that have been subjected to smart meter installations have done extensive research and found smart meters to be in violation of FCC safety limits (for example, see www.sagereports.com/smart-meter-rf ). There are significantly elevated RF exposures in comparison to typical individual exposures in daily life. When the new meters are installed in multiples, the radiation compounds. Medical and other critical-care equipment in your home may not work, or work improperly due to electronic interference from smart meters. People who have medical implants, particularly metal implants, may be more sensitive to RF exposures. Security systems, surveillance monitors and wireless intercoms may be rendered inoperable or unreliable. Some cordless telephones do not work reliably due to ambient RF emissions, and smart meters could compound the problem. Electronic equipment and electrical appliances may be damaged or have to be replaced with newer equipment so as not to register interference from smart meter RF bursts.
