Bowens' home named July 2011 Yard of the Month
Older neighborhoods have a certain charm of their own -- distinctive architectural styles, tree-lined streets, large front porches and wide sidewalks. The Southside neighborhoods of Huntington are blessed with all of these characteristics plus a new school, a beautiful park and a host of homeowners who work hard to preserve and improve their property.
As one of the older neighborhoods in Huntington, the Southside benefits from the care and attention the residents give to keep homes, walkways and driveways from deteriorating. The trees and shrubs get trimmed and replaced as needed to keep the neighborhood vibrant. It takes people who are willing to meld their talents with hard work.
Charlie and Pamela Bowen are examples of good caretakers of their neighborhood. The Southside Neighborhood Organization honored the Bowens recently by presenting them with the July Yard of the Month award at the annual summer picnic held at the Ritter Park. The Bowen home and yard, located on the corner of 2nd Street and 12th Avenue, has been drawing attention for several years. It was included on the Junior League of Huntington's garden tour two different times. The Bowens are appreciated by many individuals and organizations for their generosity in sharing plantings from their yard.
