Asking Michele Bachmann about marriage
YORK: In 2006, when you were running for Congress, you described a moment in your life when your husband said you should study for a degree in tax law. You said you hated the idea, and then you explained: “But the Lord said, be submissive. Wives, you are to be submissive to your husband.” As president, would you be submissive to your husband?Bachmann supporters are feigning outrage that the question should have been asked. That indignation is unwarranted. She said it and should be asked about it.
Moreover, her answer was a home run, not only in substance but in delivery. First was the dramatic pause. Then the smile — no offense taken — and then the conservative feminist grand slam. Whether her answer is scripturally accurate, I have no idea; what matters is this is how she thinks and how she expresses her religious views.
Now the question seemed more absurd than it was because, of course, Bachmann submits to no one. She spent the debate boxing Tim Pawlenty about the ears. She defied her party leadership on everything from TARP to the debt-ceiling. Who can doubt she marches to her own drummer?
If anything York asked a question that was revealing of Bachmann’s personality. That is sort of the point of these debates, right? No doubt it would be equally, if not more, interesting to ask her not whether she is too submissive but how she could work with Congress since she disagrees so fundamentally even with her own leadership. But that’s for another time.

Members of the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Union (SDA) have rejected claims today by the union’s national secretary, Joe de Bruyn, that allowing same-sex marriage will be politically disastrous for the Gillard Government, and have called on the ALP heavyweight to survey his membership on the issue.
SDA Members for Equality is campaigning to change the SDA’s policy of opposing marriage equality, saying that the majority of members most likely support the reform.
Spokeperson for SDA Members for Equality, Duncan Hart, said:
“The SDA membership have never been consulted on the issue of marriage equality, yet Mr De Bruyn seems to be on a personal crusade to stop equal rights for same-sex couples.”
“Mr De Bruyn’s comments are particularly hurtful to many of the gay and lesbian members of the SDA.”
Hart said that the SDA leadership was “out of step” with its members on the issue, pointing to a Galaxy Poll last year which found that 80% of young Australians support marriage equality.
“Polls show that a majority of Australians support marriage equality and young people are the strongest supporters. It stands to reason that the SDA membership, which is largely young people, would also support marriage equality.”
“But Joe de Bruyn refuses to listen to his members on this issue. He continually uses his position to push an anti-equality agenda.
“It’s time that Mr De Bruyn actually consulted and represented his membership on this issue rather than the personal views of Joe de Bruyn.”

I find it incredibly sad Joe spits in the face of a signifcant percentage of his membership, both queer and allied. If I can offer a touch of dry humour, aren’t there allegedly a few queers in retail? What happened to being representative of constituents? How do Joe & co keep getting re-elected?
