Craig man accused of forcing himself on 19-year-old

— A 30-year-old Craig man appeared in court Wednesday accused of forcing himself on a 19-year-old woman in Dream Island Mobile Home Park on July 10.

The man has been charged with nonconsensual sexual contact, a Class 4 felony, and third-degree misdemeanor assault.

Since being arrested July 13, he posted $50,000 bond and was not in custody when he appeared in Routt County court. The court is in the process of appointing a public defender to represent him. He is next due in court July 27 at 2 p.m.

According to an arrest affidavit filed with the court by Steamboat Springs Police Department Detective Dave Kleiber, the incident occurred at about 8 p.m. at the mobile home park and started when a woman was visiting friends on the west side of the property. The man arrived at about 7:45 p.m. and was helping a friend work on a car. According to police, the woman reported that the man was intoxicated and started talking to her about smoking methamphetamine.

“He asked her if she was willing to sell methamphetamine for him and wanted to know if Steamboat would be a profitable area for him to start selling methamphetamine,” the affidavit states.

The woman told him that she did not do drugs and that “he was with the wrong crowd if he wanted people to smoke methamphetamine with him,” the affidavit states. The woman then said he snapped and became enraged and extremely violent. Two or three men tackled him, and the woman said she hid next to a fence behind a large tree.

The affidavit states that the man saw the woman and calmly walked over to her. He tried to punch the woman and then pinned her against the fence and repeatedly tried to kiss her and put his hands down her pants, the affidavit states. The woman was able to get free, and she ran to her car and locked herself inside. She did not see the man again and reported the incident to police.

According to the affidavit, the man has an extensive arrest record going back to 1996 that includes arrests related to drugs, theft and weapons. In July 2004, he got into a fight with his girlfriend in Moffat County. Police thought he was armed and dangerous during that incident, and a 12-hour standoff ensued. Police fired chemicals into the house, forcing him out. Police reported finding a sawed-off shotgun in the house.

He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and probation related to that incident. In late 2005, he was sentenced to a year in prison for violating the terms of his probation.
