Personality Tests Can Be Friend or Foe When Hiring
Appleby: There are a lot of really good personality tests out there, but they’re not necessarily industry specific. The better ones are more oriented towards particular types of jobs. For example, I don’t know about you, but I’d make a horrible salesperson. I interact with people well, but it isn’t in me to be a good salesperson. You either have that personality or you don’t.
Bentley: Right. Appleby: So the idea is to create a test that can demonstrate whether someone has that sales trait or not — and I think it is a trait. Then you can use that test to weed out people, or make better decisions as to who’s likely to be good at it and who’s not.
There are tests that deal with sales. There are tests that address detail orientation. There are tests that address relating to customers over the phone. They’re all directed at one trait or another within a personality type.
Bentley: It’s not necessarily testing for a particular skill set then, but whether you’re inclined to succeed in certain positions? Appleby: But there are also tests out there that are broad personality tests. Myers-Briggs, for example. A lot of people take it in college because it’s supposed to tell you what your personality is. And it does ... There are companies out there that sell tests like the Myers-Briggs, and employers who use them. That’s OK. They’ll teach you a lot about employees or potential employees, but they’re not as job-related as the other types of tests. That’s where I start getting critical.
Appleby: Well, there are three issues that pop up. Some of the really old tests ask rather “iffy” questions about religion, sexual orientation and stuff like that. There’s a privacy problem with those. But those are mostly gone by now so we don’t concentrate on those too much.
The second potential issue is in fact the Americans with Disabilities Act. Some of the older tests and even some of the newer ones that aren’t very well put together ... instead of asking about traits, they start getting into what’s wrong with you that you have a particular trait.

I’m an ENTP apparently. This means I’m Extroverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Perceiving. This is in contrast to those Introverts who are Sensing, Feeling, and Judging, of course, because I’m nothing like those people.
See, I took the Myers-Briggs Personality test and that was my result. The most extreme of my four letters was the E, though the T was also high on the list. The N and P? Moderate.
When I’m in a social situation, I want it to be social. At the beach, I want it to be loud, filled with stuff to do, noise, people, etc. The Introverts who took the test viewed the beach as a relaxation place, where things should be quiet and bother-free.
When describing an apple, I view it more in terms of where it came from, where it’s going, what thoughts it arises in me. Obviously I first say it’s red, but I care more about what kind of apple it is rather than the color. The Sensers cared primarily about the apple’s attributes here and now as opposed to ideas and thoughts the apple could spark.
If I had to choose five people from a baseball team to go to Hawaii, I’d choose the top five performers. Some of the Feelers cared more about who really wanted to go, or who “tried their hardest.”
When I go to the grocery store, I prefer to walk up and down every aisle and see if I need things. Making a list (even though I try sometimes) doesn’t help that much because I’ll forget to add things to the list and I really don’t know what I want until I see it there. Some of the “Judging” people go so far as to organize things on the conveyer belt. That’s crazy.
