Former River Valley Schools Official Charged With Embezzlement
A former employee of the River Valley school district is accused of embezzlement. Erik Nieman, who was the district's transportation director, was fired this week amid allegations that he used a school-issued credit card to make personal purchases, amounting to over three thousand dollars. The Berrien County prosecutor has now charged him with embezzlement between one and 20 thousand dollars, which could mean up to five years in prison. Authorities say that, among other things, Nieman used the credit card to make purchases at an AT&T store and a rent to own business in Indiana. However, the Herald Palladium reports that he says he mistakenly confused his own Fifth Third Bank Credit card with the district card, which is also from Fifth Third Bank. The supervisor, who had attended Wednesday's meeting of the Library Board and chastised the board for sloppy finances, demanded a complete accounting of the $2,100 after learning that proper procedures were not followed in obtaining the money.
