The Bugatti Veyron is a head turner. When I arrive at Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire to test drive the Grand Sport it’s drawing quite a crowd. No wonder. The car is a beauty - sinuous, sleek, dazzling. Her electric blue looks are being polished by Bugatti’s technician, Giuseppe Negri and people are lining up to have their photos taken by the beast.

The GS looks thoroughly at home here. Scenes from Goldfinger and Tomorrow Never Dies were shot at elegant Stoke Park Golf Club. James Bond would certainly not look out of place behind the wheel of a Veyron. And anyone considering buying the GS will need a touch of the Midas.

It’s the fastest and, priced at £1.2 million, most expensive convertible in the world. The car can reach speeds of 253MPH (223MPH with the roof off) and accelerate from 0-60 in a blinding 2.7 seconds. It has 1001 horsepower and 1250NM of torque. Former racing driver, Pierre-Henri Raphanel, tells me you feel the torque in your stomach. Goodness. Perhaps I shouldn’t have had lunch.

Raphanel is Bugatti’s official test driver. It is his job to take potential buyers - and enthusiastic journalists - out in the car and he spends 120 days of the year in its comfortable Napa leather seats.

He tells me I am the first female British journalist to drive a Bugatti. Is he apprehensive? Not at all.

He’d like to see more women buying the car. At the moment, it’s predominantly men (Simon Cowell, Ralph Lauren and Tom Cruise are all owners) – who are attracted to its sheer brute force – but, as Raphanel emphasises, it’s an elegant car. And easy to drive too. You needn’t – and probably shouldn’t take it to the max. Because you might just be blown away.

He takes the wheel first to give me a taste. The trick is avoiding the potholes, of which there are many. Once the road has cleared, he turns to me and says, ‘I am going to accelerate – are you ready?’ I think I am – but crikey. What a seat-pinning rush to the head, stomach, chest. I am bright red. This is normal for women, apparently. Men tend to shake.

And this is nothing. We’re not even on a track. Imagine what it must feel like at full whack. Terrifying. Raphanel took the Bugatti Super Sport to 268MPH last month and reclaimed the world record. For him, driving with me must be a stroll.

THIS summer Pauline Quirke will renew her wedding vows with husband Steve at her home in Buckinghamshire after losing six stone.

The Emmerdale actress showed off her weight loss in the latest issue of Woman magazine and said she lost the weight after she stepped on the scales and weighed in at 19 and a half stone.

She decided to do something about it by eating a calorie controlled diet and going to the gym as she does not believe in gastric bands or surgery.

And it was when her husband saw a picture of her in a Monsoon dress on the red carpet at the British Soap Awards that they decided to renew their vows.

She told Woman: “The picture made it to one of the magazines, someone showed it to my Steve and I got a text from him saying: ‘Wow. I’ve just seen the picture of you at the Awards. You look fantastic. I wish I could marry you all over again.’ “From that little seed, we are going to renew our wedding vows in August at home in Buckinghamshire with all our friends there.”

The actress from Penn will be leaving Emmerdale at Christmas after 18 months but she said there will be a chance for her to return.
