One of the things that qualified Clark for the distinction was recording the lives of native South American people in remote locations during the 1960s - there were no roads, no electricity, no television, no grocery stores, and no motorized vehicles of any kind.

Jungles and rainforests where the only mode of transportation was and likely still is on foot and by boats made from logs.

Clark lives in the small town of Overgaard where not a whole lot goes on most of the time and there are definitely no rainforests nor jungles.

It is a peaceful existence usually bereft of many of the issues that plague larger communities.

Clark is content living a nondescript life in the not so well known town now that he is older, but that was not always the case.

Nearly 45 years ago when he was in his 30s he was plodding through the Amazon Rainforest documenting indigenous tribes, some completely unknown to the rest of the world.

To be more exact, he was in the Amazon River Basin at the bequest of The Summer Institute of Linguisitics photographing the lives of hitherto little known tribes.

Among the tribes he documented were the Ashininka and Machiguenga Indians.

Not only did he photographically record the lives of indigenous South American tribes, he even married one of them, accidentally that is.

How does one accidentally marry someone they have only just met?

Well, for Clark is was a case of mistaken bartering over a hand-carved wooden comb.

Clark saw an unwed native Amazonian girl with the comb and decided he wanted it. He began bartering with the girl to trade a metal comb for the wooden one.

The girl accepted the trade, and much more, unbeknownst to Clark.

For days the girl followed him mercilessly, even when he was attending to daily "constitutionals." All the while Clark was completely unaware they were newlyweds in the eyes of the tribe.

Three days into the "marriage" it dawned on Clark that something was not quite right. He went to a missionary pilot named Ted Long who flew him into the rainforest village asking for advice.

Long asked if Clark had given the girl anything to which Clark recounted the tale of bartering for the comb.

Long explained the tribe's marriage customs and that in their eyes Clark and the girl were now married, but said he would consult with the village chief to see what could be done to remedy the situation.

After coming to an agreement allowing a divorce in exchange for a metal lense hood the chief could fashion into something, the misunderstanding was resolved and Clark was released from his marital obligations.
