Artist stays aloft through the spirit of horses

Equine painter and muralist Suzan Hamilton-Todd says her Brooklyn accent is a perfect ice-breaker.

�When people commission me, they ask how a New York City girl became an equine artist in the Santa Ynez Valley,� says Suzan, from her small art studio at 1050 Edison St. in Santa Ynez. She admits she can�t conceal her East Coast brogue but relishes the chance to explain how horses became her artistic muse � and helped her create home.

At 10 years old, she saw Brooklyn�s horse-mounted police quell a riot. �People ran and parted ways, terrified of this animal that I thought was the most beautiful thing I�d ever seen.� Then her interest deepened. Suzan also watched a lot of late 1950s, early �60s cowboy shows like Bonanza and Gunsmoke, which fed her fascination with horses.

Suzan has created some 500 paint-on-ink works. �I always felt like the horse symbolizes power, freedom and constant movement,� she says. �They�re always moving, and I�m always moving. The horses have been taking me places � they took me here.� An exhibition of the artist�s work is currently on view at the Valley Grind Coffee House through August, next to the post office in Santa Ynez.

Suzan knew her calling from the get-go. She started doodling loopy pen-and-ink drawings while attending a Catholic elementary school � a place where she remembers artistic expression taking a backseat to minding one�s Ps and Qs.

The nuns couldn�t make heads or tails of the golden-haired girl haunted by horses. Suzan got in trouble for her artistic diversion. But when she was 13, a teacher encouraged her to apply to the High School of Art and Design in New York City. Before long, she was accepted as a result of her strong booklet of horse drawings. Her parents were thrilled at first, but her mother fretted and fumed one day when she came home from school and gleefully told her that she saw two guys kissing on a stairwell.

�She told me, �That�s it. You�re out of there!�� Suzan recalls. But high school only reaffirmed the budding artist�s feeling that she was exactly where she belonged. She continued at the school, and during her junior year, she became irrevocably drawn to fashion illustration, a magazine feature that had virtually vanquished with the advent of photographic images.
