GM recalls 15,000 new Buick LaCrosse, Chevy Impala models David Shepardson/ Detroit News Washington BureauWashington — General Motors Co. is recalling about 15,000 new vehicles in North America to address two separate issues - reprogramming software in some Buick LaCrosse vehicles and inspect power steering hoses in Chevrolet Impalas.
The Detroit automaker said it is recalling 11,905 2012 Chevrolet Impalas in the United States and Canada to inspect for proper installation of the power steering hose, which, if misrouted, could be damaged and spray fluid onto hot parts of the engine creating potential for a fire.
GM knows of no crashes, injuries or complaints related to this condition.
With the engine on, the possible misrouting of the power steering hose could allow it to be damaged by heat from the catalytic converter. This could allow power steering fluid to escape and spray onto the catalytic converter's surface, which could lead to smoke or a fire.
The condition was discovered during production at the Oshawa (Ontario) Assembly Plant on July 21, when a "thermal event" took place.
Dealers will inspect the power steering hose and if they find it has been misrouted, replace the hose and add abrasion protection. GM has called all customers to notify them of the issue.
There are 10,334 vehicles in the United States.
GM is also recalling 4,293 2012 Buick LaCrosses to reprogram the electronic brake control module because of an incorrect calibration that may cause the StabiliTrak electronic stability system to not properly detect a sensor malfunction and fail to illuminate a warning light.
If a sensor malfunctions, the driver would have a difficulty in maintaining the desired path and speed. GM knows of no crashes, injuries or complaints related to this condition.
The recall covers vehicles built between June 9 and July 2.
Dealers will reprogram the module. Letters were sent by FedEx on Aug. 5 to customers telling them of the potential condition.
There are 4,077 vehicles being recalled in the United States.
