Heritage Days to be steamy

PORT ANGELES — Heritage Days will put the past on display in downtown Port Angeles today through Sunday.

This year, which marks the 10th anniversary of Heritage Days, the festival will focus on the pre-1914 era of steam power, said Barbara Frederick, executive director of the Port Angeles Downtown Association.

That's the era when the first of two dams on the Elwha River, the 108-foot-tall Elwha Dam, was built.

The Elwha Dam, which was completed in 1913, and the 210-foot Glines Canyon Dam, built in 1927, will be dismantled beginning Sept. 17 as part of the National Forest Service's $325 million overall Elwha River Restoration Project to return the river to a free-flowing state and restore salmon habitat.

“We pay tribute to the era of steam, when the dams on the Elwha River were built and downtown began to thrive,” the Port Angeles Downtown Association says on its website at www.portangelesdowntown.com .

From the engines that pulled the trains that transported logs from the North Olympic Peninsula to the world to the steamships that brought settlers, workers and supplies, and steam-powered logging equipment, steam was the power that built Peninsula communities in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

“It's all about celebrating the history of downtown and of Port Angeles,” Frederick said.

A highlight of the festival will be a 1915 Stanley Steamer passenger mountain wagon — once used to haul guests to such resorts as Sol Duc hot springs — displayed along with several other well-loved and maintained Horseless Carriage Club of America cars.

The cars will be exhibited on the lot at First and Laurel streets downtown from about 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. today.

Among them will be Nick Dante of Sequim's 1909 REO and a 1908 Model S Ford — which predates the Model T — owned by Dennis Hood of Carlsborg.

After the exhibition, the car owners plan to tour Ediz Hook before returning to the Quality Inn in Sequim, where out-of-town members are staying, said Kathy Monds, executive director of the Clallam County Historical Society, which organized the exhibit.

They will drive back roads as much as possible, she said, because the top speed of the cars is about 25 mph.
