Pine Nuts: Tribute to a man who could make people smile

INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. — Perusing a roll call of names recorded in the Famous Missourians Hall of Fame, I was pleasantly surprised to see Emmett Kelly had been inducted alongside Mark Twain, Harry Truman and Sacajawea. Kelly was a minor hero of mine, as I long admired his portrayal of “Weary Willie” in the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Rather than a trickster, Weary Willie was a gloomy clown, based on the hobo life of the Great Depression. He could never quite sweep up the circles of light (spotlight) that managed to elude his broom each and every night. Weary Willie could not even crack a peanut with a sledgehammer. Yet he managed to make millions smile. While working as news director of WOCB on Cape Cod way back in the last century, I had the good fortune to interview Emmett and take him out for a beer after the interview. He was the most humble, most compassionate man I ever met. He told me about the Hartford fire, how the clowns and acrobats tossed buckets of water onto an unrelenting circus tent fire that would take 176 lives, and how from that time forward the tears he would conjure up for his act would flow freely. I was not talking to Emmett Kelly, I was talking to Weary Willie. Well, Emmett died not long after that interview and I was saddened like I had lost a member of the family. But rather than wallow in my sorrow, I determined to compose a celebration of his life and run the Boston Marathon in his honor. So I rented a tuxedo, replete with tails and white gloves, and carried it on a hanger to Hopkinton, where I pulled it on, and made my way to the starting line. Half way up Heartbreak Hill, though my heart was bursting with emotion, something began burning in my crotch. It was the fluid they use to clean tuxedos. The cleaning chemical was turning to fire between my legs and creating a debilitating rash that caused me to run with my legs spread apart. The smiles started turning into laughs, and I had to smile myself — not a pleasant smile, but more of a grimace.

The clown is performing a hand stand with this feet and legs partially in the air. The clown has a brown suit on with a green shirt and brown tie with red dots and gold tie tac. The long tie tac use to be popular years ago. Emmet Kelly Jr has signed the ball. The leg has been broken off of the clown on one side and been glued back on but you can hardly tell it. The other figurine is a Homeless clown sitting on a log. He has a light brownish suit with the knees out buttons on his lapel.The clown has a peach colored tie with red dots loosely around his neck. The clown has black shoes and hat on. There is a dull color to the clown's clothes. There's a squirrel in the clown's right hand and there's a white dove sitting on the log on the left side. I don't see any cracks, chips or feel any breaks in this clown. Both clowns have red nosesThey are old as the lady who had them stated she'd had them since before 1975.
