Yuma hotels, AZ game & fish team up to lure tourists.

Yuma, AZ -- Arizona Game and Fish Department joins effort with local hotels to reel in tourists.

Yvonne Peach has managed the Best Western Coronado Hotel on the 200 block of South 4th for 30 years, she says, "it's normally always slow in the summer time, business doesn't probably start picking up until dove season."

Peach knows the ups and downs of tourism in Yuma and says she appreciates every effort to attract tourists to Yuma.  Especially when her hotel is less than 50% occupied.  Peach isn't alone.  Many hotels throughout Yuma are also seeing a dip in reservations.  

So the Arizona Game and Fish Department decided to try something out, "we launched a pilot program last week. A loaner program for fishing equipment for local hotels,"  according to the Department's Public Information Officer, Chris Bedinger.

Starting with 5 hotels around town including the Clarion Suites, Hilton Homewood Suites, Hampton Inn, Radisson and the Best Western Coronado.

Bedinger says the overall goal is to provide more recreational options to guests and make it as easy as possible for them, "we want guest to be able to just go to the counter, check out the equipment and come out to the Colorado river and drop a pole in the water and catch a fish."

If all goes well, Bedinger says the program will spread throughout the state. "we're hoping the state will take a look at it and see that its beneficial as well. Because for us, license sales is a revenue generator. We don't receive any state general funds."

Hotel Manager Yvonne Peach says the program is already seeing results. "yes we have. As a matter of fact this weekend we had two little kids that came and their parents picked out the poles for them and a little tackle box and away they went."
