Cynthia Nixon's 'Newsweek' Op-Ed: 'America's Reached a Turning Point For Gay ...
Star Cynthia Nixon says the nation is at a turning point in the battle for marriage equality. Nixon has been a vocal advocate for providing gay and lesbian couples the right to marry in her home state of New York for years now.With New York having recently passed legislation allowing same-sex couples to legally wed in the state Nixon wrote an op-ed published in Newsweek reflecting on the work it took to get the legislation passed and the moment she learned she could legally marry her fianceé, Christine Marinoni.
Nixon and Marinoni, along with their children and a few friends, were waiting on a subway platform when a group of strangers got word of the news, Nixon writes in the op-ed.
“They called out to us, we cheered, and others did too,” Nixon writes. “Somebody offered to take a picture to commemorate the moment, and it’s such a great shot: all different ages, down in the subway, looking so proud and so, well, New York-y.”
“As a nation, I think we’re at a turning point in the fight for marriage equality,” she added. “For the first time, a majority of Americans say gay people should be allowed to be married—not just allowed to have civil unions, but to marry. The distinction is important: when you say to somebody, “This is my wife” or “This is my husband,” everybody understands. A civil union? Well, what is that? Will it be recognized in a hospital? Will it be recognized by your employer? Will it be recognized by your insurance company? If it costs them money, probably not.”
Nixon has not said when she and Marinoni will make use of the newly passed legislation allowing them to legally wed.
