Bridgeton 'Youth to Youth' one of many county groups open to all

BRIDGETON — Monday’s town hall meeting on recent violence here agreed on one thing for sure; youth will be at the center of any reformations.

The News caught up with Bridgeton Municipal Alliance - Youth to Youth program on Thursday with their summer day camp at Cherry Street School in full swing.

Youth to Youth is merely one of the many programs and organizations in Cumberland County that open their doors to area residents of all ages.

“The teenagers here are volunteering their time,” Director Karen Barnett said while an auditorium full of teens and young children exercised after lunch.

Youth to Youth offers volunteering high school age teens the chance to assist in directing the summer camp program while other certified teachers administer classroom activities five days a week, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Credentialed teachers are paid a salary and some of the peer leaders at the site receive completion stipends and some are also on salary.

Cross-age mentoring is the overarching theme of Youth to Youth, with family management issues, commitment to school, alcohol and drug use prevention and peer relations as the life lesson plan.

Word of mouth brings in more teens, as do high school students working with parent liaisons at their respective schools.

“Everything is about learning,” said Barnett, who added lesson plans should show “being educated can also be fun.”

The program runs on a year-long schedule full of weekday and weekend activities. During the school year, members will meet once a week at a location that allots them the room. Not every weekend includes an activity but the group will be at the DuPont Theater in Delaware for “Hollywood Invades Delaware,” a teen idol competition.

Their group was 20 strong at the Ashley McCormick Center in downtown Bridgeton last Saturday at 9 a.m. to participate in painting the mural destined for the pocket park a block over.

One of the bigger programs Youth to Youth assists in are graduation night events they’ve called “Step Up and Step Out” for eight graders who are headed to high school.

A bus trip to Philadelphia is another event that draws a strong crowd. Seven busses of youth and adults depart Bridgeton for the Spirit of Philadelphia, a cruise ship along the Delaware River, before they arrive home well after 2 a.m.

Frogs Preschool Lesson Plan

Frog Facts:

A frog is an amphibian which can lives on land near swamps, pounds and other damp places. Frogs lay their eggs in the water. Tadpoles hatch from the eggs and the tadpole grows into an adult frog. A frog’s skin must stay moist or it will dry out and the frog will die Frogs soak water into their body through their skin and breathe through both nostrils and their skin. Frogs breathe through their nostrils while also absorbing about half the air they need through their skin. Frogs have a sticky, muscular tongue to catch food.  They usually eat worms and bugs.

Frog Math Activities Children can Paint a paper plate with green paint and allow to dry. , trace two  hand prints on green construction paper and .glue it  onto the back of the paper plate on either side. Cut two white circles and use a black marker to dry in the eyes. Glue the eyes to the top of the paper plate. Glue on a pink pipe cleaner to make the frog’s mouth.
