Grundy County Tops Area Unemployment Rate

The Tennessee Department of Labor issued some sobering news about the state of unemployment.

The unemployment rate in Hamilton County jumped a full percentage point in June to 9.2%, but that's not the worst place for unemployment in our viewing area. That honor goes to Grundy County, whose jobless rate skyrocketed to 14%.

The owners of Daryl's Pizza in Tracy City say they're pretty picky about who they hire. They say it's because of some bad experiences with employees in the past. "You get quite a few people in here who don't have a good background, and it's hard to put trust in them, and we've had a few apples I guess you could say," said Jamie Meeks, manager of Daryl's Pizza in Tracy City.

Jamie says dedication is also a big part of the hiring process. She wants somebody who will stick around. That's exactly what 21-year-old Donny Copeland doesn't want to do. He's been applying to places that are only part-time until he can made enough money to get out of Grundy County. "I'm disappointed I can't get one. I've tried and tried and tried, and nothing ever happens," said Copeland.

Herman Sanders has lived in the area for more than 30 years. That's the dedication he's looking for as well. He says he can afford to hire someone right now, but the problem is that no one in the area has enough skill, and by the time he trains them they want to move. "It's hard to find that right person that you would be able to train and keep around," said Sanders, owner of Sander's Lube & Oil in Tracity City. "You want somebody that's going to stay with you at least for an extended period of time, and I just haven't been able to find that person."

Trust, skill, and dedication. They all have to fit in line to get out of the unemployment line.

Out of the 95 counties in the state of Tennessee, only 4 had a decrease in unemployment numbers from May to June. We checked to see which Tennessee county in our viewing area had the lowest unemployment rate. That honor goes to Sequatchie County, whose rate for June was 8.9%. That did go up from May's 8.4 %, but that's still far lower than the rate in Hamilton County and many others in southeast Tennessee.

Grundy County has one of the newest courthouses in the state. The previous courthouse was built in 1885, but was burned by an arsonist on May 3, 1990. This new courthouse was opened in April 1996. It's a two story brick building with a projected pedimented portico front entrance. There is also a low hip roof with a center octagonal cupola. Directly in front of the main entrance is tree-lined Pelham Rd.
