Western hotel guests have been slow to return to Bangkok, says Shangri-La

"The hotel industry in Bangkok in the remaining months of this year and in 2012 should be better than last year but [still] not very good," said Thierry Douin, vice president and general manager of Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok.

He said business travellers from Western countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States as well as Australia had a lower number of trips in the months leading up to the election, and their numbers are still quite low.

However, businesspeople from Asia, mostly Singapore and Hong Kong, are coming back to Thailand, he said.

Douin said hotel operators in Bangkok would face similarly tough situations as last year because room rates here are perhaps the lowest in the world and |it is very difficult to increase them because of low demand.

Moreover, established hotels are facing difficulties as many new hotels have opened. Operators may soon receive a further negative impact if the government endorses a minimum daily wage of Bt300.

However, Shangri-La has not cut its room rates, to maintain its goal of increasing revenue per available room by 20 per cent next year.

The hotel hopes for an average occupancy rate of 50-55 per cent this year and to increase it to 60-65 per cent in 2012.

It will celebrate its 25th anniversary today, (August3), offering two special packages, "The 2500" and "Silver Salute".

"The 2500" package is available at US$2,500 (Bt75,000) for two people, valid for a minimum stay of two nights between now and October 31. Highlights of the package are an overnight stay in the Presidential Suite, a 150-minute treatment at Chi Spa, a gourmet Italian dinner, and a round-trip transfer in a BMW 7-Series limousine.

The "Silver Salute" starts at Bt5,500 per night in a deluxe room, and includes a 45-minute massage. The package is available for a minimum stay of two nights until December 21.

The first 25 guests who were born on the first operational day of the hotel, August 3, 1986, will receive a complimentary buffet lunch or dinner for two. They will also receive a discount of 25 per cent for lunch or dinner at any of the hotel's restaurants. The special dining offer is valid until August 25.

Shangri-La also invites couples planning an engagement or wedding to visit its "Signature Weddings Fair" at the hotel on August 27-28.
