Alabama preseason practice report: Day 7
Future WR Duron Carter still is not practicing, and it looks as if he won't be cleared to join the team's workouts until next week. The transfer from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College now has missed eight practices. The wheels simply continue to turn slowly regarding his transcript. Grades from two of his four classes are in. The fact that he remains in limbo keeps Danny Woodson Jr. in limbo. The freshman WR from LeFlore High School in Mobile might be looking at a grayshirt, unless Carter is not admitted or attrition claims another player on scholarship.What's hot Why is there so much focus on Carter's status? Because superstar Julio Jones now plays for the Atlanta Falcons, and senior Darius Hanks will miss the Crimson Tide's first two games because he played in one game during a redshirt freshman season. Alabama has many good receivers in camp. Some are very good, such as returning starter Marquis Maze . But there isn't a Julio Jones in this group. Help might be on the way next year. Recent commitment Chris Black of First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Fla., is an elite prospect. At 5-foot-11, 175, he is small compared to Julio Jones, but Black is a 5-star prospect. And here's a recruiting nugget: Amari Cooper , a 6-2, 180-pound wide receiver from Northwestern High School in Miami, is expected to announce his commitment to Alabama on Aug. 26. There's less hype about Cooper because he was injured for much of his junior year.
The grind Two starters were not at practice, at least during the early viewing period: junior inside linebacker Dont'a Hightower and senior center William Vlachos . Alabama coach Nick Saban is scheduled to meet with the news media after practice. We're sure to hear what's involved. Hightower injured his left hand or wrist during Sunday's Fan Day practice at Bryant-Denny Stadium. He has paused during practices since then to have extra bandaging applied. The injury is not considered serious. Junior Barrett Jones showed his versatility by filling in at center on the first-team line. He has started at right guard the past two seasons and has practiced at left tackle so far in camp. True freshman Cyrus Kouandjio filled in at left tackle, next to left guard Chance Warmack .
