CJ Pike: Newfield Library closing for repairs

Newfield Village Library at 637 Water Street will be closed for repairs from Tuesday, Aug. 23, through Saturday, Sept. 3, and will reopen on Tuesday, Sept. 6. During this time, new energy-efficient windows will be installed.

In other library news, according to Librarian Cheryl Cause, 15 local children have just completed the facility's Summer Reading Program. Each child will receive tickets to a Portland Sea Dogs game and a "goodie bag" of fun prizes. The "goodie bags" will be handed out the next time that the children visit the library.

Also, the library's new book list has been released, with several new books on the shelves for adults as well as children. Here is a partial list of the news books, for adult fiction: "Distant Hours," by Kate Morton; "Split Second," by Catherine Coulter; "Then Came You," by Jennifer Weiner; "Mobbed," by Carol Higgins Clark; "Ape House," by Sara Gruen; "Chasing Fire," by Nora Roberts; and "Six Kill," by Robert Parker. New books for young adults include "Clockwork Angel," by Cassandra Clare, and "Sabotaged," by Margaret Haddix. New DVDs include "Dear God," "Driving Miss Daisy," "Cassanova" and "Elizabeth: The Golden Age." The rest of the list will be published next week.



FIREMEN TO HOLD CHICKEN BARBECUE

The Newfield Fire Department will hold a chicken barbecue at the Public Safety Building on 85 Water Street on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. On the menu will be chicken, cole slaw, beans, potato salad, pasta salad, cake and ice cream, coffee, lemonade and water. The supper costs $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 through 12, and free for children under age 5.

Proceeds from the supper will benefit building improvements at the Public Safety Building.



MUSIC, MOVIES AND MAGIC AT WILLOWBROOK

Music, movies and magic will be the themes for an exciting evening at 19th Century Willowbrook Village at 70 Elm Street in Newfield on Thursday, Aug. 18.

Castleby will perform music that evening. An old Charlie Chaplin movie clip will be shown afterward. Then magician Steevegraves will perform.

The benefit of course with the purchased games is that your child does not need to be online to play them. That of course saves your internet time for other matters if you are on a payment plan for the hours you use the internet. If you have a service for your internet that allows 24 hour online service at a fixed cost then you can find the free games for your children. Almost no cost for some education and that is something that you almost never find.
