WebOS based tablet aims to be more business friendly than rivals

The long awaited HP TouchPad is now available. Running the much praised webOS operating system acquired with Palm, the device is aimed very much at business as well as the consumer and carries many features that will make it an easier fit with enterprise security than other comparable devices.

The top benefit of the TouchPad is the multitasking that webOS delivers. Any running application can be de-focused and another application opened. When multiple applications are open, they appear as cards on the screen that can be scrolled through independently, with full cut and paste functionality between them.

No other tablet, or smart phone, operating system currently offers such an easy, intuitive and effective system of multitasking. There is also a facility to group applications in card stacks, allowing users to associate certain applications into logical groups, adding further value.

As if that were not enough, HP has made great strides to make webOS, not only on the TouchPad but on the Pre3 smart phone too, more attractive to enterprise with device encryption and accommodation for enterprise class e-mail handling.

Another key feature of the TouchPad is its ability to be managed remotely, as a fleet. Administrators can prevent unauthorised use of any TouchPad. Security policies can be implemented, such as requiring alphanumeric passwords of a specific complexity or length, with a set the number of failed password attempts after which data is erased. Remote wipe of lost or stolen devices is also available to administrators. Cisco AnyConnect and IPsec VPN support are aimed squarely at high level corporate users. Browsing and e-mail are protected by 128-bit encryption and SSL, allowing secure Exchange access. Where a device is lost or stolen, HP says that a new device can be restored for a user entirely over the air.

The other webOS devices, such as the Pre range of smart phones, means that there is already a healthy application selection to support the TouchPad, with HP putting considerable resources behind the push for more applications for more developers. Though not of interest to the enterprise users of course, a good example of the ease with applications can be ported for webOS was found in Angry Birds by Rovio. HP said that it was successfully ported in a matter of days.

The TouchPad is available in 16GB and 32GB versions, with prices at €479 and €579 respectively. "What makes HP TouchPad a compelling alternative to competing products is webOS," said Jon Rubinstein, senior vice president and general manager, Palm Global Business Unit, HP. "The platform's unmatched features and flexibility will continue to differentiate HP products from the rest of the market for both personal and professional use. This is only the beginning of what HP's scale can do with webOS.

Logitech Wireless Keyboard K270 with Long-Range Wireless(920 ...

Too many times I have caught my feet under the keyboard wire and pulled it off the shelf. I’ve done this with my mouse as well. This Logitech wireless keyboard can be used anywhere. The instructions say it can transmit up to thirty-three (33) feet, but who can see their monitor that far? What it means is that you can kick back in your chair with the keyboard anyplace you want it. The keyboard itself is sturdy, lightweight and comfortable to the touch – not at all clicky. The typical special functions keys (hot keys) are here as well.

I did have a problem unifying (or synchronizing) my keyboard to the receiver (tiny little nickel sized USB device). But even after the computer stated it was not unified, it worked never-the-less. There is an on/off switch for this function with a stand-by mode to save battery life. The two AA batteries are supposed to last for at least two years. Having a Logitech wireless mouse, I can attest to that probably being true and that has no on/off switch.

Another cool fact is that you can use that one USB port receiver for up to six other “unifying” products. So my mouse and keyboard are both ‘unified’ through the same little receiver, leaving other USB ports open for other uses. For the price and the ease of use, this is Logitech’s best bargain keyboard yet.

SUCCESS STORY! I spilled a Coke onto my new keyboard and after a day, most of the keys were stuck. So I had nothing to lose and used S C Johnson Wax 70227 “WINDEX” 25-COUNT ELECTRONIC WET WIPES WITH the Windex Spray. I totally soaked the keyboard and then wiped up the residue by turning the keyboard upside down onto the wet wipes. In a few minutes my keyboard was working like new!

EASE OF SETUP:

My first surprise in using the keyboard is that it required zero instructions, unlike any other computer gadget I’ve ever seen. The batteries are in, you just pull the tab over them (as it says to do on the tab)…

Then you plug in the tiny wireless plug to the slot it shows you to on the computer or laptop. Which was a bit obvious, but should you not recognize where it goes it comes with photos of where to put it on the back of your computer or on the side of your laptop.

That’s it. No reading needed. Look at the picture for a second and you know what to do and how to get it going.
