Hearyman rolling around, ambassador for Can-am Spyders

Faran Hearyman pulls up in front of the store, cuts the ignition, pulls off her helmet and shakes her long blonde hair.

Then the familiar question comes.

“What is that”?

That is a Can-Am Spyder Roadster. It’s a revolutionary motorcycle, just a few years in production now. Two wheels in the front, one in the back makes it different from more familiar “trikes” with the two wheels in the back.

Faran Hearyman lives at Judsonia, rides the Spyder whenever she can and is a traveling ambassador for the Spyder folks. How she became one of five such ambassadors in two nations is even more unusual than the vehicle she rides.

It started with church.

She said, “My husband Marty and I attend church in Searcy, and we begin meeting with a group that was mostly bikers (motorcyclists). We weren’t. I had ridden behind my dad when I was a girl growing up in Little Rock, but he never taught my sister and me to drive one.

“The more we listened to those bikers from church the more we got interested. They did things. They had fun. They had rides to help people. We wanted to join them, but we didn’t have the money to by motorcycles. So I got on the Internet and looked for contests.”

She found one, but the Can-Am rules were stringent. Entering required writing an essay and making a five-minute video. It was a challenge, and Faran Hearyman goes for challenges. 

“I’m an adrenaline junkie,” she said.

She made that video with the help of friends, and it closed with a scene of a string of motorcycles rounding a curve following by Faran on a very small bicycle. 

“I need a motorcycle” were her strongly voiced closing remarks.

Can-Am went for it. Faran and 6-year-old daughter Zoe were flown to Los Angeles. Zoe was included because her birthday coincided with the trip. In the space of a few days, Karan was taught to ride a Spyder and instructed in what was needed in the way of an ambassador, a combination goodwill, public relations and demonstrator. She became Spyder’s first female ambassador and one of five working the United States and Canada.

“They had older male ambassadors,” she said, “and they saw a need for a woman, for someone from the South and for someone from a small town.”

This took place just last spring. Since then, she has made a trip to Kentucky on the Spyder and multiple trips around Arkansas, often with Marty and the two girls, Zoe and 6-year-old Lily following in a van. Marty, a physician, has mastered driving the Spyder and acquisition of one for him could be in the future.
