Cowboys' second half hammers Titans

THE North Queensland Cowboys showed no respect to the man whose NRL career they launched, beating Scott Prince and his Gold Coast Titans, 28-20 at Skilled Park tonight.

In front of 15,741 fans, the Cowboys outscored the Titans 22-6 in the second half, despite a try-scoring double from Will Zillman and a quality performance from Prince in his 100th NRL game.

It was the Titans' 14th loss in 2011, and keeps them languishing on the bottom of the NRL ladder.

As hard as they have tried all season the Titans have struggled to capitalise on their chances and despite the absence of Johnathan Thurston from the Cowboys the Gold Coasters were left to rue another night of missed chances as Matt Bowen led the North Queensland show.

Prince, Mark Minichiello, Luke Bailey and Greg Bird contributed strongly as the Titans produced their best half of the season in the opening 40 to lead 14-6 at halftime.

With Prince's kicking game on song, Minichiello figured heavily with several strong carries, while his ball-playing ability was also impressive.

Neither side's defence was willing to crumble in the first half and it was Prince's boot that brought the first points when Zillman pounced to touch down out wide.

Prince's conversion earned them a 6-0 lead.

Zillman didn't have to wait long to land his second, showing neat footwork to finish a strong Bird bust.

Desperate for another two competition points in the absence of co-captain Thurston, the Cowboys, who were beaten soundly by the Tigers last weekend, soon kicked into gear.

Dominating field possession Ashley Graham got them back in the game when he finished a movement in the corner, with the Bowen conversion cutting the lead to 12-6.

But they should have drawn level just before halftime when former Titan Gavin Cooper showed a clean pair of hands to latch on to a James Segeyaro grubber, only to fumble the ball across the line.

Titans' start to the second half mirrored the rest of their season as the Cowboys burst into the lead with Graham scoring his second after Steve Michaels lost the ball in his own in-goal.

When Brent Tate scored his first try since returning from knee surgery, the Cowboys skipped 18-14 clear before the boot of Prince again became the Titans' biggest weapon.

He chipped the ball over Graham's head and into the waiting arms of Michaels who scored in the left corner.

The Black Eyed Peas Superbowl Halftime Show: They're no Prince ...

After careful consideration, I can think of no better description for the Black Eyed Peas’ Superbowl Halftime Show than this:  an overly wrought production lacking in musical skill, emotional intelligence, and entertainment value; filled with self-indulgent posing, embarrassing lighted costumes, and laughable auto-tune usage; insulting both music fans and the very “youth” it was designed to bring to the table.  Even Slash and his mirrored top-hat couldn’t save them.

If you want to see an artist who respects his audience and delivers entertainment in its truest form, look no farther than Prince’s 2007 Superbowl performance – the best halftime show in Superbowl history.  Even in the pouring (purple) rain, he had the crowd completely engaged and eating out of his hand; his passion evident in every note poured out of his guitar. The Black Eyed Peas were, at best, middle school garage band by comparison – and even that could be construed as insulting to middle school garage bands the world over. (I would even sit through Tom Petty again if it meant I didn’t have to hear the Black Eyed Peas.) 2012 Superbowl – I hope you treat us better.

P.S. – A note for Miss Aguilera. It’s much easier to remember the words to a song when you are actually singing the melody from that song – not participating in a vocal gymnastics display.
