KETCHUM • Marybeth Flower likes to go into the woods and try to capture the flavor of great paintings she’s seen. She and her husband, Joe Bauwens, then print their photographs on watercolor paper, giving them a rich look.
“We love to do both realistic and abstract works that look painterly — mostly of nature,” Flower said.
The Ketchum hobbyists must be doing something right. They were among 130 artists from all over the country chosen to participate in the juried Sun Valley Center Arts and Crafts Festival, held today through Sunday at Atkinsons’ Park in Ketchum.
The festival, considered one of the nation’s top arts and crafts festivals, will feature wide varieties of sculpture, glasswork, fiber, woodworking and paintings.
“For me, it’s the epitome of what we do — an opportunity to showcase artists, an opportunity for people to see really great art, an opportunity for people to ask questions of artists and an opportunity to relax and listen to some good music,” said Kristin Poole, co-director of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts. “And it’s even a good place to bring the kids, since we have an arts and crafts corner set aside for the kids.

Dyersburg State Gazette: Local News: Newbern City Library ...
Children of Newbern and surrounding areas participated in a world tour without leaving the comfort of the Newbern City Library. How, may you ask? They used their imaginations to travel by participating in crafts, stories, and projects provided by librarian Janice Peevyhouse and her amazing staff, as well as lots of volunteers.
The Summer Reading Program theme, "One World, Many Stories", was adequately reflected in the activities and atmosphere of the library.
China, Italy, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Great Britain, Egypt, and their home country, the United States were the countries that the children and adults "traveled" to. Chinese dragons, Independence Day fireworks, Mexican maracas, and Egyptian mummies were just a few of the crafts that children were able to participate in making.
Also, other highlights of the program were an English tea party and a visit from pirates.
Children of all ages were encouraged to dress up in their "fanciest" tea party attire and join Peevyhouse and the staff for an English tea party. Partygoers sampled a variety of scrumptious treats, including strawberry lemonade, cupcakes, fruits, vegetables, and jam sandwiches.
Two friendly pirates also invaded the library. Lemont and Lisa Hall, known as Raven and Passion, entertained the children with storytelling and answering questions from the children.
National Hot Dog Day was the final celebration of this year's world tour. Participants enjoyed hot dogs and drinks provided by Newbern Friends of the Library. Infamous corn dogs prepared by Tracy Wiley were also available for participants in this annual event.
Newbern City Library encourages every one of all ages to continue reading throughout the year. Feel free to stop in on Mondays from 11 a.m. till 7 p.m., and Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. till 5 p.m. For more information on their available resources, please call 627-3153.
