Changes made to school buses

LAS CRUCES — Students may not find buses to be the most desirable form of transportation, but before school begins in August, the Las Cruces Public Schools would like to inform parents and students about changes and policies for the upcoming school year.

"Riding a bus is a lot safer than riding in a private vehicle," explained Larry Altamirano, director of transportation for Las Cruces Public Schools, "The buses are reinforced on all sides, and (sit) higher. The drivers are trained, so it is safer to ride a school bus to and from school."

One of the only major changes that will affect busing this coming school year was made to middle school and high school hours. Class will now begin 20 minutes later at 9 a.m and end five minutes earlier at 3:30 p.m. which will slightly modify the bus schedules for the upcoming school year.

Although these changes may not apply to everyone, it is important for all parents to be informed of certain procedures they can follow to guarantee the safety of their child.

"We want to make sure students, especially the younger students, who have not ridden the bus, know the location where they're suppose to get off the bus," Altamirano said.

He suggested parents drive their children to the bus stop location, so they know exactly where to get off. One way to ensure a student will get where they need to be is to place personal information in the backpack, such as a student's first and last name, parents' names, telephone number and home address. The bus driver can use this information to guarantee a child gets home safely. Even if a student has ridden the bus before, it is important that they always make sure they have everything before boarding or leaving the bus.

At the beginning of each school year, a parent and student transportation handbook is passed out on the bus with information on disciplinary procedures, schedules, regulations and safety procedures. The handbook is also available for students and parents to view on the district's website. Parents should go over the handbook with their children so that both are aware of their responsibilities.

Rick Ramirez, the interim manager for the STS Las Cruces division, said that the new camera system put in by STS is far better than the previous systems. Now, multiple cameras film all areas of the bus in high resolution, with sonar and tracking.
