Coles County Fair adds Elvis and Johnny Cash tribute, NASCAR simulator to ...

CHARLESTON - An Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash gospel tribute concert, NASCAR simulator and two nights of harness racing have been added to the roster for the upcoming Coles County Fair.

These new attractions will join truck and tractor pulls, a demolition derby, professional bull riding, livestock shows, a carnival, a midway full of food vendors and other favorites. The fair is scheduled for Sunday through Aug. 7 at the Coles County Fairgrounds in Charleston.

Scott Wattles, portraying Elvis Presley, and Keith Furry, portraying Johnny Cash, are scheduled to perform with Wattles' Blue Suede Crew band at 6 p.m. Aug. 7 at the grandstand.

The fair will offer free entry to the fairgrounds and free parking all day Aug. 7, as well as free grandstand admission for the concert by these Mattoon-based tribute artists. In addition, all carnival rides will be $1 all day Aug. 7.

"We did the free gate and the $1 rides last year, and attendance was huge," said Clark Fairley, co-vice president of the Coles County Fair Board.

The Ford Fusion M&M NASCAR simulator is scheduled to be open all day throughout the fair, with sponsorship from O'Reilly Auto Parts, the Diepholz auto dealership, and Pilson Auto Center.

"You are going to get in that simulator and you are going to feel like you are a NASCAR driver," Fairley said. He added that the simulator will be accompanied Sunday, Monday and Tuesday by a half-scale NASCAR racer version of Chapman Motorsports' mascot, "Toby," a character that was in the Disney/Pixar film, "Cars."

Evening harness races are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday at the grandstand, with the Illinois Stallion Stakes taking place at Wednesday's race. Afternoon races will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

General admission to the grandstand will be free during all the harness races, through sponsorship from First Federal of Central Illinois, Prairie State Bank & Trust, Gray's Feed & Seed, Dr. Diane Wilson/Equine and Insulation Service.

Admission to the fairgrounds will be free 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Aug. 6, and all day Aug. 7. Adult general gate admission will be $2 after 4 p.m. all week, except Aug. 7, and general auto parking will be $2. Children younger than 16 will be admitted for free to the grounds.
